Most of us, certainly of my age, have long known what happened in Hastings back in 1066, when perhaps the phrase "one in the eye" was born! But how many of us, even the runners amongst us, knew what happened there in 1908?
It seems that after the intriguing Olympic Marathon from Windsor Castle to the stadium at White City, there was an upsurge of interest in distance racing, and so it was decided to have a similar race in Hastings and St. Leonards in December of that year.
When you're in the 25th mile, and looking forward to finishing, just think that if you'd been running 100 years ago you'd have almost finished, as the 1908 race was *only* 25 miles, whereas we are all accustomed to running the now familiar 26 miles 385 yards that had of course been raced for the first time during the Olympic Games earlier in the year.
None of us will be around for the
2108 edition of this event, so let's enjoy this one whilst we can
